The Worcester Police Department had issued an arrest warrant for Santos-Padgett for Armed Assault to Murder and worked in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Squad and the Haverhill Police Department to apprehend the individual.

According to court documents, Santos-Padgett aimed a gun at the victim’s head and pulled the trigger, killing her.

Police identified the suspect through surveillance video and license plate readers, which caught his vehicle in the area where the shooting took place.

‘Unacceptable and disgusting’: Saugus police investigating brawl at Kowloon Restaurant https://whdh.com/news/unacceptable-and-disgusting-saugus-police-investigating-brawl-at-kowloon-restaurant/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 19:33:59 +0000 https://whdh.com/?p=1712473 Authorities responded to a fight involving multiple parties at the Kowloon Restaurant on Route 1 in Saugus Wednesday night at around 10:30 p.m.

Six officers already on the scene working as part of a detail were quickly alerted and worked to deescalate the situation.

Several individuals involved in the dispute were detained for questioning and to receive necessary medical treatment. Videos of the fight posted to social media show a chaotic scene and at least one individual with a bloody face.

No arrests were made, but Saugus Police said the investigation is ongoing and that charges may be forthcoming, particularly for one individual who was seen using a glass bottle in the fight, a felony offense.

“The Kowloon is a family friendly restaurant, unfortunately a few unruly patrons ruined a nice evening for many others,” Saugus Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli said in a statement. “A disturbance such as this on Thanksgiving Eve is unacceptable and disgusting.”

The restaurant and bar closed early following the conflict.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Saugus Police at 781-941-1199.

Massachusetts is creating overnight shelter spots to help newly arriving migrant families https://whdh.com/news/massachusetts-is-creating-overnight-shelter-spots-to-help-newly-arriving-migrant-families/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 18:13:04 +0000 https://whdh.com/?p=1712467 BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts has begun awarding grants to local agencies to set up temporary housing sites for homeless families as officials grapple with finding newly arriving migrants places to stay after hitting a state-imposed limit of 7,500 families in the state’s emergency homeless shelter system.

Catholic Charities Boston is the first organization to be awarded a grant to provide temporary rooms to extremely low-income families with children and pregnant individuals, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay announced this week.

The grant will pay for a site in the greater Boston area that opened on Tuesday evening and can accommodate up to 27 families, or about 81 people, as they wait to enter the state’s emergency shelter system, officials said.

Catholic Charities Boston will provide bedding, meals, staff, and security. The site is available to families eligible for the the state’s family shelter system but who could not be immediately placed in a shelter.

Democratic Gov. Maura Healey announced the $5 million grant program earlier this month.

Sarah Bartley of the United Way said the agency has already received several other grant applications. The grants are meant to support community gathering spaces with restrooms and heat, such as places of worship, community centers, and school buildings, to provide safe space for families to find short-term, congregate shelter, meals and other basic necessities, she said.

The flexible program will remain in place through the winter and spring, officials said.

On Monday, the state began letting homeless families stay overnight in the state transportation building in Boston. The space in the office building is large enough to provide overnight shelter for up to 25 families with cots and limited amenities and will only be used in the evening and overnight hours, officials said.

The space will be available to families determined eligible for emergency assistance and is expected to operate for about two weeks until additional safety net shelter sites are operational.

The spike in demand is being driven in part by migrant families entering the state. About half of the current shelter caseload are new arrivals to Massachusetts, according to the Healey administration.

As of last Friday, there were 92 families on the state’s waiting list for emergency shelter.

Dorchester 9-year-old gets big break in “Good Burger 2” https://whdh.com/entertainment/dorchester-9-year-old-gets-big-break-in-good-burger-2/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 16:24:34 +0000 https://whdh.com/?p=1712453 The long-awaited sequel to 1997’s Nickelodeon film “Good Burger” was released on Paramount+ on Wednesday, and it includes a star turn from a budding young local actress.

Shot in New England, “Good Burger 2” features nine-year-old Alexis Turner, of Dorchester, alongside stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. In the film, Turner plays Ketchup, one of Mitchell’s on-screen daughters.

“I’m so excited to see it,” Turner said. “It was a great experience. I loved to be there, I had a really fun time.”

Turner told 7News some of her favorite parts of filming included scenes where she ate french fries, ran down hallways, and got into a pillow fight.

The young actress, who has been performing since age four, is supported in her career by her mother Antoinette Toney.

“I’m very proud,” Toney said. “She’s my best friend and I’m just going to always be there for her. As long as she wants to do it, I’m going to support her.”

Good Burger 2 is streaming now on Paramount+.

Alex DeBrincat, Red Wings knock off NHL-best Bruins for 2nd time, 5-2 https://whdh.com/sports/alex-debrincat-red-wings-knock-off-nhl-best-bruins-for-2nd-time-5-2/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 23:41:07 +0000 https://whdh.com/?p=1712518 BOSTON (AP) — Alex DeBrincat and J.T. Compher each had a goal and an assist, and the Detroit Red Wings beat Boston 5-2 on Friday for their second victory over the NHL-leading Bruins this season.

Robby Fabbri, Dylan Larkin and David Perron also scored for the Red Wings, who are the only team to beat Boston (14-2-3) in regulation. Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists and Ville Husso stopped 25 shots.

“A big win for us,” Husso said.

In their third meeting in a month — the Bruins won the first game on Oct. 28 — Detroit took advantage of six Boston penalties to improve to 10-0-2 when scoring four or more goals.

“A really good start. I feel like our guys were focused and locked in,” coach Derek Lalonde said. “A pretty complete road game against a very good team.”

Jake DeBrusk and Danton Heinen scored for the Bruins, who had been 5-0-2 since losing at Detroit on Nov. 4. Jeremy Swayman made 24 saves on his 25th birthday.

“It’s one thing if you play well and things happen and you don’t get the result,” Bruins center Charlie Coyle said. “But that wasn’t the case I don’t think.”

Despite a 16-save shutout Wednesday against New Jersey, Alex Lyon was the Red Wings’ backup. Husso had allowed at least four goals in his past three starts, but had been on paternity leave and hadn’t played since Nov. 11.

“He should have a kid every six weeks,” Lalonde said, smiling.

The Bruins finally solved Husso when DeBrusk knocked home his own rebound on the power play to get Boston within 2-1 early in the second period.

It was DeBrusk’s second goal in as many games after managing one in his first 16 games.

But Husso kept the surging Bruins at bay until Fabbri scored on a wrist shot from the faceoff circle at 13:24 of the second.

Heinen’s wrist shot 4:12 into the third got the Bruins within a goal. But Brandon Carlo was called for hooking less than a minute later and Larkin scored five seconds into the power play to give Detroit another two-goal cushion.

Perron added an empty-netter with 1:45 left.

“Once we did start chipping away, it seemed like we had a penalty and they would capitalize,” DeBrusk said. “They controlled our momentum swings and that’s why they got the win.”

Boston coach Jim Montgomery gave veteran James van Riemsdyk the day off in the team’s traditional Black Friday home matinee, with Morgan Geekie returning to the lineup.

An early Geekie miscue and an odd bounce put the Bruins in a hole. With Geekie serving a holding penalty, Compher redirected Gostisbehere’s shot at 5:13. The puck bounced off Swayman’s chest and trickled between his legs.

The Red Wings made it 2-0 late in the first period when DeBrincat pickpocketed rookie Matt Poitras in the neutral zone, skated in alone and wristed a shot past Swayman for his team-high 12th goal.

Boston couldn’t overcome the sleepy start and lost in regulation at home for just the fifth time in 50 regular-season home games over the past two seasons.

After using 11 forwards and seven defensemen for several games this season, including their first victory over Boston, the Red Wings had a traditional 12-6 lineup with Jake Walman (illness) scratched.

It worked as Detroit won its second straight after returning from a 0-1-1 trip to Sweden.

“We know we’re a good team,” Husso said. “If we can bring it every night, every day, our best game, we can beat any team in this league.”

Moritz Wagner scores 27 to lead Magic over Celtics 113-96 for 6th straight win https://whdh.com/sports/moritz-wagner-scores-27-to-lead-magic-over-celtics-113-96-for-6th-straight-win/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 23:38:01 +0000 https://whdh.com/?p=1712515 ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Moritz Wagner scored 27 points and the Orlando Magic beat the Boston Celtics 113-96 for their sixth straight win Friday, throwing the Eastern Conference’s Group C up for grabs in the NBA’s inaugural In-Season Tournament.

Paolo Banchero had 23 points and seven rebounds for Orlando. Franz Wagner finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Cole Anthony came off the bench with 16 points.

Jayson Tatum led Boston with 26 points. Jaylen Brown added 18, but made just 2 of 16 shots after scoring 12 points in the first 10 minutes.

Jalen Suggs hit two of the Magic’s four 3-pointers on a 17-0 run after Boston had taken a 62-50 lead early in the third quarter. The Celtics missed all eight shots during the game-changing run and went scoreless for 4:42.

The Magic finished 3-1 in group play. The loss dropped Boston to 2-1 with a game at home against Chicago coming up on Tuesday night. The Brooklyn Nets, who beat the Magic, are also 2-1 pending a game against Toronto on Tuesday night. Friday’s score left the Magic with a plus-17 point differential in group play and the Celtics are at zero.

If there is a three-way tie after group play, point differential will determine the group champion.

Boston center Kristaps Porzingis left the game in the third quarter with tightness in his left calf after scoring nine points and taking down four rebounds.

The Celtics also played without Jrue Holiday, who missed his first game of the season with a sprained right ankle.

Sam Hauser’s 3-pointer gave Boston an 11-point lead, the largest of the first half, after a first quarter in which Orlando shot 8 for 22 with eight turnovers.

‘They have set a standard’: Brothers help elevate Methuen High School football program  https://whdh.com/news/they-have-set-a-standard-brothers-help-elevate-methuen-high-school-football-program/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 22:55:08 +0000 https://whdh.com/?p=1712310 Methuen High School may not be playing in a Super Bowl next week. But there’s no question the Rangers are one of the state’s top programs, thanks in large part to a pair of brothers who have been a driving force behind the team’s recent football success.

“We have a lot of other great players too, for sure, but they have set a standard,” said Methuen head football coach Tom Ryan, discussing brothers Shane and Drew Eason.

Ryan continued, crediting the Eason brothers for their standard in the weight room and their standard in practice.

“They’re excellent, hard working kids and it shows,” he said. “The results show for them.”

The Easons made it look relatively easy over the past two seasons with Drew under center and Shane in the backfield.

Speaking with 7NEWS, Shane said Drew is a great leader and a great role model who “does all the things for the team.”

“[He] steps up in the biggest moments,” Shane said.

Drew similarly praised his brother.

“When there is someone I need to go to, he is the guy,” he said of Shane.

Shane and Drew together helped drive Methuen to an 18-6 record through the past two seasons, highlighted by a Final Four berth in 2022.

Coach Ryan said Shane “has got to be one of the best running backs I have ever encountered.”

“And Drew has such good command of our offense,” he continued. “He can sling it with the best of them in the state.”

The Eason brothers’ talent is reminiscent of their father PJ, who was a standout for powerhouse Everett in the 1990s.

Drew said his father told him he led the league in scoring.

“I will take his word for it,” Drew said.

“He was a power back,” Shane said of his father. “He also used his speed. He was faster than most. He could run through most. He was just an all-out dog.”

The Eason brothers’ mother and father have had a front row seat as their children helped put Methuen football on the map.

“I think that he is a big piece of them,” said the brothers’ mother, Tammi. “They are very coachable kids. I think that comes from their dad for sure.”

PJ, the brother’s father, said it has been fun watching the two play together.

“When one does something good, the other one is the first one there to cheer them on,” he continued.

PJ said he had been hoping to see his sons play sports together. To now see that happen, he said, “is tremendous.”

With all their football success, Coach Ryan said the Eason brothers are leaving a legacy that will impact the next generation of Rangers players.

Ryan said their brand of success, though, may be unique.

“We’re going to be able to show kids films of these kids one day and be like ‘Hey, this is kind of how we want you to do things,’” Ryan said. “But I don’t think you’re ever going to be able to copy what these kids have done.”

Shane Eason is a junior. Drew, a senior, threw for 120 yards and three scored in a 48-16 win over Dracut Wednesday night, finishing his high school career with a school record 6,212 passing yards and a school record 62 career passing touchdowns.

In addition to the school records, Drew’s 6,212 passing yards are good for ninth place all-time in Massachusetts history.

Ullmark, NHL-leading Bruins remain hot, top Panthers 3-1 to improve to 14-1-3 on season https://whdh.com/sports/ullmark-nhl-leading-bruins-remain-hot-top-panthers-3-1-to-improve-to-14-1-3-on-season/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 04:33:37 +0000 https://whdh.com/?p=1712187 SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Linus Ullmark stopped 27 shots, and the NHL-leading Boston Bruins topped the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Wednesday night in a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

John Beecher and Jake DeBrusk scored in a 3:05 span of the second period to put Boston in control, and Charlie Coyle also scored for the Bruins.

Anton Lundell scored for Florida, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 22 shots. The Panthers saw their six-game winning streak on home ice snapped and lost for just the second time in their last nine games overall.

“We were really good on the rush defense,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said of his team’s shutdown third-period performance. “We had a lot of numbers back, we were putting bodies on bodies and we had a little bit of time to make good breakout plays.”

Boston improved to 14-1-3 on the season and 4-0-0 after losses. The Bruins have 31 of a possible 36 points so far — by far the best in the league, yet slightly behind their pace from last season when they had 32 points through 18 games.

“We’ve only lost one game in regulation, so any time you’ve played this amount of games and have that, you’re doing something right,” DeBrusk said. “There are a lot of guys that are contributing in different ways and you need that to win. Our goaltending has been solid as well, and it bailed us out in a lot of games.”

The 31 points after 18 games ties the fifth-most in NHL history. The only teams with more: the 2012-13 Chicago Blackhawks had 33 points, while the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers, the 1929-30 Bruins and last season’s Bruins each had 32 points.

Boston finished with an NHL-record 135 points last season, yet still lost to Florida in seven games in the opening round of the playoffs. The Panthers went on to play in the Stanley Cup Final, but are 0-1-1 against the Bruins so far this season.

“This is going to be a real good rivalry for five or six years,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said before the game. “Boston’s been a great team for a long time. We’re trying to get to that level.”

The Panthers suffered their first multi-goal loss since Nov. 4 and fell to 12-6-1, but remain in second place in the Atlantic Division.

Ullmark improved to 7-1-1 on the season.

”He is a good, big goalie,” Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad said of Ullmark. “He likes to play the puck, so every time you rim it, he stops it and makes a play. Obviously, we found a way to get to him in the past and we’ll do it again someday.”

The Panthers were again without captain Aleksander Barkov, who missed his second consecutive game with a knee injury. Barkov has been skating and Maurice said there is a chance — if the doctors approve — that the forward could play Friday against Winnipeg.
